FAQ
-
The resources and lesson plans are available to teachers working in state-funded secondary schools teaching 11 to 14 year olds in science, geography and English. Career leaders and Heads can register for the school to get sent resources and materials.
-
If you sign up for the pilot in spring and summer 2024, straightaway. If you sign up for September you will get the resources at the start of summer term 2024 to start your planning for the next academic year.
-
The resources have been developed to be picked up and delivered by teachers without excessive preparation.
-
The Climate Schools Programme has been developed together with industry and inspires young people with showing role models working in green jobs. Getting involved is an effective way to embed climate education across the curriculum, starting with science, geography and English, as well as supporting teachers to improve their knowledge and teaching practice of this area. The resources will show some of the work that engineers and technologists are already doing work to tackle climate change, helping to reduce young people’s anxiety around this issue.
Through taking part, students will develop skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communication – all vital to future employability.
68% of secondary schools students feel that climate change education should be included in all subjects and generally think that a more ‘solutions’ focused approach (rather than teaching about the inevitability of climate change) is needed (source: BSA Future Forum Report - Climate Change Education)
90% of teachers agree that climate education should be compulsory in schools but felt overstretched and 70% hadn't received any training on this topic (source: Teaching the future: Research with UK teachers in the current state and future of climate education)
The Climate Schools Programme addresses these points - it focuses on solutions to tackling climate change and provides training and resources for teachers in this area.
-

All content will communicate:
Every individual can have an impact on the climate, and everyone can make choices and live lives that are more sustainable
Solving the climate crisis is not down to any one person, group, or country – we all need to work together
There are many capable people working hard to address climate change, and engineers are a crucial part of making the solutions
Solutions to climate change are wide ranging: we know some already, and others have yet to be invented
Implementing solutions to climate change is more than simply having the technology; we need to understand how people think, how society works, and how to proceed in an ethical and inclusive manner
